Governor Bakani’s career with the Central Bank started in 1985 as an Economic Research Analyst. He was appointed the Head of the Economics Department in 1998 and became Chief Economic Advisor for the Bank, a position he held until February 2005, when he was appointed Deputy Governor—Policy and Regulation for a five-year term.
In December 2009, the PNG Government’s National Executive appointed him as Governor and Chairman of the Bank of PNG Board for a term of seven years. He is also the Registrar of Savings and Loans Societies in PNG.
During his term as Governor, Loi has been active in encouraging financial inclusion and the expansion of microfinance, as well as taking steps to modernise PNG’s banking payments system.
